 2023 Preview 


       Clarke County completed the 2022 season with a 7-6 record. Last year Clarke County captured the region one title and a number one seed in the Class 2A playoffs. They finished region play with a 5-0 record. Clarke County lost in the quarter-finals of the playoffs last season to a good Highland Home team by a score of 19-0.

       The Bulldogs hope to get back closer to the 13-2 record in 2021.

       Since 2010, Clarke County has gone a combined 78-69. Their 53.1% winning percentage ranks 22nd in Class 2A over the past thirteen seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Clarke County has managed to compile a record of 157-121. Their 56.0% winning percentage ranks 13th in Class 2A and 126th in the AHSAA.




       The Bulldogs will be under the direction of new head football coach Rob Carter as they enter the 2023 season.  Coach Carter comes from Sylacauga where he was the head football coach the past two seasons. He was at Beauregard from 2014-2020. Over the course of his career, Coach Carter's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of six times and won two region championships. Coach Carter won a state championship at Beauregard in 2016. The Bulldogs have one of the toughest overall schedules in Class 2A. Their opponents had a combined record of 70-45 last season. That ranks 1st in Class 2A and 10th in the AHSAA.

       The Bulldogs enter the 2023 season having won 11 straight region games.

       The Bulldogs are considered one of the favorites for the region one championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs.

      AJ Ezell will be back this season at running back after rushing for 1,363 yards and 16 TDs in 2022.

       The Bulldogs open the 2023 season at home against non-region opponent Sweet Water on Friday, August 25 at H.G. Prim Stadium. Last year the Sweet Water Bulldogs finished with an overall record of 8-3 and in second place in Class 1A region three. The Bulldogs lost in the quarter-finals round of the Class 1A playoffs to Millry by a score of 41-6.

       Clarke County and Sweet Water have met a total of 11 times on the football field. The Bulldogs have a 8-2-1 record against the Bulldogs. They last met in 1983 with Sweet Water winning by a score of 17-6.

       Clarke County lost 2A All-State  offensive lineman Jamichael Pugh to graduation. He was named to the first team last season.

       The Bulldogs return 2A All-State Junior linebacker Ethan Henson. He was named to the first team last season. The Bulldogs also return Senior athlete A.J. Ezell. He was named to the first team.
